🌊 Join the Fight Against Ocean Pollution with Recycle Môr! 🌊

November 24, 2023

The Recycle Môr project, launched in October 2021 by Lloyd Nelmes and the project partners Waterhaul, addresses the issue of plastic pollution in the seas, particularly focusing on end-of-life fishing gear. The project was inspired by local fishers who, after investing considerable time cleaning discarded fishing gear from their lobster pots, brought attention to the alarming extent of the local plastic pollution problem.

🚮 Why It Matters:

The project aims to intercept plastic waste before it enters the sea by strategically placing free-to-use, conveniently located recycling bins for end-of-life fishing gear in every commercial harbour. The idea is to make it easy and accessible for fishermen to dispose of their waste properly, preventing them from resorting to improper disposal methods, such as throwing it into the sea or landfill.

💡 Our Solution:

Recognising the financial challenges faced by local fishers, we provide free recycling bins. While larger harbours have them, we are specifically targeting smaller, more rural locations in Pembrokeshire, where proper disposal facilities may be lacking.
We are actively collecting and recycling end-of-life fishing gear from our bins in Abercastle, Lowertown Fishguard, Solva, Porthgain, Tenby, Porthclais, Saundersfoot, Little Haven, and Neyland. Our commitment to responsible recycling goes beyond just placing bins; it involves hands-on efforts from our dedicated staff and volunteers.

The Ocean Lab is always happy to take drop offs and large collections.

💪 How Your Support Helps:

• Funds go towards placing bins in smaller harbours.

• Our dedicated staff and volunteers manually sort through collected fishing gear.

• We use donations to educate visitors and schools, spreading awareness about responsible waste disposal.

🌊 Your Impact So Far:

Since launching the project, we have recycled 7 tonnes of end-of-life fishing gear already! Saving approximately 52,000 fish and 120 birds!

🌏 Why We Need You:

By engaging with the fishing community and providing practical solutions, the project aims to create a positive impact on the environment and promote sustainable practices in the fishing industry. Your support ensures that these coastal areas have accessible and effective solutions for responsible disposal, contributing to our mission of reducing plastic pollution in our oceans.
