We are thrilled to announce our new research project – Môr Mammals. The project, funded by the Welsh Government’s Marine Protected Areas Network Management Grant Scheme, will build on our long-term Harbour porpoise photo ID research, develop our Grey seal photo ID research, and allow us to explore Risso’s dolphins’ sightings within North Pembrokeshire.

Harbour porpoises are a priority species for conservation, but are lacking in population data for North Pembrokeshire. We will continue to work with our incredible Citizen Scientist Volunteers to collect data on our resident porpoises, through photo identification. We will also be creating a Risso’s dolphins photo ID catalogue, aiming to work with other UK Risso’s projects. Finally, we will be taking part in seal monitoring surveys, ID research, and pup counts.

With the project kicking off in September, we have been busy training our new placement students on porpoise and seal research surveys. We’ve also invested in a snazzy new camera set-up to improve our chances of photo identification, and have dived headfirst into Grey seal monitoring. We have been running more regular porpoise surveys at our Ramsey Sound site, resulting in some lovely close-up porpoise photos. Check out the porpoise photo ID update for more information.

We are excited to keep you updated on the project!
